About
Sirajul Islam of Hatubhanga village in Maijgaon union, Fenchuganj upazila, Sylhet, used to run a cattle farm, contracting work and a stone business. In 2017 he cut down the acacia and eucalyptus trees around his home and, with support from the upazila agriculture office, planted fruit trees in 2018, including 1,500 malta trees; the office supplied BARI Malta-1 saplings. The trees fruited in 2020, and in 2021 he sold about Tk 7 lakh worth of malta. From September to mid-November 2022 he sold about 17,000 kg of malta at Tk 100 per kg, earning Tk 17 lakh; 200–300 kg are sold from his home every day. The orchard also has some orange, mango, hog plum, jujube, lychee and wood-apple trees, with a poultry farm beside it. People in nearby villages know him as 'Malta Siraj', and many come to him for advice. He has exhibited his malta at two venues.
