About
The hillside fruit orchard of Mohammad Ali (65) of Gourishankar village, Nijpat union, Jaintiapur upazila, Sylhet. According to the report, he has grown oranges, guavas and papayas on about 25 acres for five years and started growing malta about a year earlier; fruit sales support his family of seven. He says he has more than 250 orange trees on about 30 bighas and used to sell about Tk 40,000 of oranges a year. In 2022 heavy rain made the oranges and guavas drop, and that season he could not sell any. The 4,500 malta trees planted the year before bore some fruit; he sold the green but sweet local maltas for Tk 100–110 per kg and earned about Tk 20,000. Wholesale and local buyers come to his house to collect the maltas. Besides the orchard he keeps cows and chickens at home, and spends dawn to sunset tending the orchard and cattle.
