About
Solaiman Hossain Molla of Bodhkhana village in Jhikargacha upazila, Jashore, planted cuttings of the Banhughli betel vine imported from India on 18 katha in Bodhkhana field about three years before early 2022; land preparation, planting and fencing cost Tk 250,000. Leaves were picked from two and a half months after planting, and the vines will bear for at least ten years. After selling Tk 500,000 of leaves in the first year he expanded the garden to three and a half bigha; over three years he has earned Tk 2.4 million from leaves and vines, Tk 1.4 million of it from vine cuttings alone. Cyclone Amphan damaged the garden in 2020, so that year brought no profit. He picks leaves two days a week, sorts them and sends them to market; the large leaves are in high demand. He uses little chemical fertiliser and more organic manure and oil cake. Many local farmers now grow betel with cuttings from him.
