Sumon Ahmed's Integrated Farm

About

Sumon Ahmed of Bailakhali village in Babuganj grew up as the son of a sharecropper. With money earned abroad as a painter he bought 173 decimals of land, including the plot his father once sharecropped, and after returning home in 2019 built an integrated farm. One of his two farms has about 1,200 papaya trees and three ponds, the other 400 more papaya trees; he also grows brinjal, sponge gourd and sweet pumpkin and raises fish. This year he sold Tk 17 lakh worth of papaya. He raises seedlings from Indian Shahi and Kashmiri papaya seed in a UV-stabilised polythene seedling house; this year's target is 2 million seedlings, 450,000 have been made to order, and each sells for Tk 40. Income was Tk 6 lakh in 2023, Tk 15 lakh in 2024 and Tk 25.6 lakh in 2025. Fifteen workers, six of them women, work on the farm. Farmers come from across the country to buy seedlings and learn methods; at the Delowara Krishi Training Centre, named after his wife, he gives free training with food and lodging and says he has trained about two thousand people. According to BSS, his high-yield farming on limited land has won him seven national and international awards, including recognition from Nepal, the University of Dhaka and several honours in India.
