About
The Sun Fashion House is the handicraft business of Sadia Parvin Runa (Sadia Nawaz), a woman entrepreneur in Dewanganj, Jamalpur. After her family fell into severe financial trouble around 2015, she started in early 2016 with only Tk 2,700, on the advice and encouragement of Parvez Khan and his wife Hajra Akter. She first bought cloth for three dresses and embroidered them with nakshi stitching; workers of BRAC's nakshi project bought them. Within two years she had built up a capital of several lakh taka and began buying cloth wholesale from Jamalpur, Narsingdi, Baburhat and Islampur in Dhaka, and thread from Sadarghat. Women from Dewanganj and neighbouring Bakshiganj do the embroidery on contract to her own designs and earn Tk 4,000-5,000 a month each. According to supervisor Kajoli Begum, the business makes one-piece, two-piece and three-piece sets, panjabis, fatuas, 8 kinds of nakshi kantha, 7 kinds of bedsheets and children's clothes, and 1,200 women work for it. The goods are sold retail and wholesale in Chandpur, Narsingdi, Bogura, Mymensingh, Netrokona, Dhaka and elsewhere, and also retail locally. Sadia earns about Tk 30,000-40,000 a month from the business.
