Gas from 26 to 30 taka a cubic foot, and a 30,000-taka bill every month

This attar still in Sujanagar makes about 12 tola of attar a month at 6,000 taka a tola, against a gas bill alone of 30,000 taka. Tea factories pay 11.93 taka per cubic foot; this trade pays 30.

This distiller of about 70, in Sujanagar village in Barlekha, Maulvibazar, came back to the family trade after 35 years working in the Middle East. His still produces roughly 12 tola of attar a month, selling at 6,000 taka a tola, while the gas bill alone runs to about 30,000 taka a month. His rate went from 26 taka to 30 taka per cubic foot, against 11.93 taka charged to the tea industry for the same gas. The report says his production cost now exceeds what he earns, yet he has kept all 12 of his labourers on. Around 250 attar units and some 300 operators in the village are under the same squeeze.
