Fish chips from a rented flat: 700 kg sold a month, over Tk 1 lakh profit after costs
A woman in Cox's Bazar started making sea-fish chips after two earlier ventures stopped. From a three-room rented flat she sells 700 kg a month and keeps over Tk 1 lakh in profit after costs.
In 2020 a woman in Cox's Bazar began selling beauty products online and made Tk 50,000 profit in two months. She then made pickle from a fig tree near her home, but the tree was cut down and the lack of raw material ended it. After two closures in a row she searched the internet and YouTube for new ideas, failed several times, and then started making sea-fish powder. Because of a serious storage problem she makes it only in the fishing season. In 2024, to grow the business, she tried making chips at home from tuna and poa fish, succeeded after several attempts and built a brand called Fiso Fish Chips. Her factory and office are now in a three-room rented flat. She sells 700 kg of chips a month and keeps over Tk 1 lakh profit after all costs. Members of seven families work with her, and she has trained 30 women to make the chips. Marketing and management were her big challenge; in October she took a three-day BRAC Bank training to improve them. She wants to meet domestic demand first and think about exports later.
Lessons
- 1.If a product depends on one tree or one source, the business can stop suddenly; secure the raw-material supply first.
- 2.Make hard-to-store products by season; this entrepreneur makes fish powder only in the fishing season.
- 3.Making the product is not enough; marketing and management must be learned, and training raised her confidence.
