Two and a half crore taka of fish in a three-hour market

The Dipnagar market, started in 2009, turns over 2 to 2.5 crore taka between 6 and 9 a.m. each day, including around 40,000 kg of pangash.

The Dipnagar market on the Gabtoli-Mohammadpur embankment in Dhaka started in 2009 and is now the country's largest wholesale point for pangash. Between 6 and 9 a.m. it turns over 2 to 2.5 crore taka, with around 40,000 kg of pangash changing hands - more than at Karwan Bazar, according to the traders' society president. One arot owner sells about 5 tonnes a day, worth 5-7 lakh taka. The market has about 400 wholesale shops, five cold storages that hold fish at -20C for up to two months, and an ice factory selling blocks at 90-100 taka. Retailers come in from as far as Savar, one of them buying 150-200 kg of sea fish a day.
