90,000 taka of a wife's savings, and 8 crore taka of turnover a year
A shoe label started in 2021 with 90,000 taka of the wife's savings, selling on Facebook and its own website; it now has two Dhaka showrooms, about 90 staff and annual turnover of around 8 crore taka.
This couple from Pabna launched their own shoe brand in 2021 with 90,000 taka of the wife's savings. At first they sold only through Facebook and their own website, and later opened two Dhaka showrooms, at Dhanmondi and Banani 10 — the outlets paid for out of a business that had already proved itself online. They do not buy in finished stock: they work with a shoe manufacturer to produce their own designs, which leaves them a margin a reseller would not have. Annual turnover is now about 8 crore taka with around 90 people employed, and they say they want the label to stand alongside the country's established shoe brands. Profit, the cost of the showrooms, and how long first income took are not given in the report.
Lessons
- 1.Designing your own line and contracting a maker leaves a margin that reselling other brands does not
- 2.Online first, showrooms later: the outlets were paid for by a business that had already proved itself
