A Mongla arot owner bought two rare dantina bhol fish for Tk 18.5 lakh at a Dublar Char auction
A Mongla arot owner bought two rare bhol fish, weighing 63.5 kg together, at an auction at Dublar Char in the Sundarbans. They were sent to Chattogram in hope of a higher price, but the report gives no final sale result.
The owner of an arot called M/S Joymoni Fish at the Mongla fish landing centre in Bagerhat bought two rare marine dantina bhol fish at an auction at Dublar Char in the Sundarbans. According to the Prothom Alo report, many fishermen went to five chars in the Bay of Bengal in early October for five months of fishing to make dried fish. One of them caught the two fish in his net on Friday night. In the last hours of the night he put them up for auction at an arot at Dublar Char. There were 20 to 25 bidders, and the Mongla arot owner made the highest bid. The larger fish weighed 36.5 kg and went for Tk 11 lakh; the smaller weighed 27 kg and went for Tk 7.5 lakh. The total was Tk 18.5 lakh, or Tk 29,133 a kg. Traders said the special gills of this fish sell for several lakh taka a kg and are exported for making medicine. The arot owner had the fish properly preserved and packed and sent them to Chattogram to sell at a higher price. The president of the cooperative at the Mongla landing centre said no dantina bhol had come there in the past 10 years, and he expected a higher price in Chattogram. The report does not give the final sale figure.
Lessons
- 1.Winning an auction among 20 to 25 bidders takes large ready cash, and buying a rare fish like this is also a big risk.
- 2.Preserving and packing a costly fish properly and sending it to the right market gives a chance at a higher price.
- 3.Such a fish may not come for years, so an arot's regular income should not be planned around it.
