At a Kuakata arot, one trawler's 195 maunds of hilsa auctioned for Tk 40.14 lakh
At an arot at Alipur fish landing centre in Patuakhali, one trawler's 195 maunds of hilsa sold at auction for Tk 40.14 lakh. The trawler owner said catches had been low for a long time and caused losses, which this sale would partly make up.
At Alipur fish landing centre in Kuakata, fish arots sell by auction. In January 2025 the trawler FB Bismillah-1 left on the 6th with 17 fishermen for the deep sea. The first two days of casting nets disappointed them. Later, about 90 km south-east of Kuakata, fish were caught, and after four days the trawler returned with 195 maunds of hilsa. The catch went to an arot called Messrs Five Star Fish, where on 10 January it all sold at auction for Tk 40.14 lakh. The arot manager said hilsa of 600-800 g sold at Tk 40,000 a maund, 400-500 g at Tk 25,000, and small ones at Tk 15,000, while other species went for Tk 54,000. The trawler owner said catches in the sea had been very low for a long time and they had been taking losses; this sale would let him recover some of the earlier loss. The boat's captain said fish were not being caught at the time. The report gives no arot commission or trawler cost figures.
Lessons
- 1.Auction prices at an arot differ widely by size: Tk 40,000 a maund for 600-800 g hilsa against Tk 15,000 for small ones, so bigger fish lift income.
- 2.Sea catches are uncertain: two days of empty nets and long-running losses. One good trip does not fully clear earlier losses.
