Started on 5 bigha with Tk 4 lakh and made Tk 7 lakh profit in year one; at 31 bigha this year rain hurt the yield
A young man in Satkhira began jujube farming on 5 leased bigha in 2012 and grew step by step to 31 bigha. This year excessive rain and waterlogging cut the yield, and he is unsure about profit.
A young man from Tujulpur in Satkhira Sadar studied up to class six and then joined his father in farming. In 2012 he leased 5 bigha from someone else and planted ball apple, Thai apple and sour jujube; his total capital was Tk 4 lakh. That same year he sold about Tk 11 lakh of jujube and made about Tk 7 lakh profit after costs. He farmed there for seven years and slowly enlarged the orchard. Last year he leased 29 bigha at Biharinagar in Jhaudanga union and spent Tk 35 to 40 lakh; jujube worth Tk 50 to 60 lakh was sold, and last year's profit was Tk 15 to 20 lakh. This year he grows jujube on 31 bigha, dragon fruit on 6 bigha and white fish on 5 bigha, at a total cost of Tk 50 to 60 lakh. But because of excessive rain and waterlogging the jujube yield was not good this year, so he is rather unsure about profit. Now 35 to 40 people work on his farms. Seeing him, many unemployed young men in the area have started growing jujube. The Sadar upazila agriculture officer says Satkhira's sandy loam soil and mild climate suit jujube, and that he is given regular advice.
Lessons
- 1.You can lease a small plot and expand after seeing profit, but as land grows, cost and weather risk grow with it.
- 2.Excess rain and waterlogging hurt yield; build drainage into the orchard beforehand.
- 3.Adding dragon fruit and fish beside jujube lessens dependence on a single crop.
