A decade-old print works sold at a loss, 45 workers down to 17

A ten-year-old screen printing works in Mirpur that printed cloth for export garment factories was sold at a loss in November 2020 as orders fell away; the new owner has no work either and has kept 17 of the 45 staff.

This screen printing works at Duaripara in Mirpur had printed cloth for export-oriented garment factories for about a decade. When Covid pushed the garment sector into a slump the orders fell away, and the owner first cut staff to hold costs down. That was not enough, and in November 2020 he sold the business at a loss. The works had been shut for some time, so the new owner got it comparatively cheap - but he says he is getting no work at all, and has kept 17 of the 45 employees. There are more than 3,000 firms in the screen printing trade nationally, and in the Rupnagar area of Mirpur many of them had closed by then.

  1. 1.A works that subcontracts to a single sector takes that sector's shock in full
  2. 2.A closed factory going cheap is not an opportunity: with no orders, cheap machines are still a burden
