A rod-and-reel shop for hobby anglers opened in Mohakhali in 2014; buyers nationwide via Facebook, but a dry year hurt even peak-season sales

Driven by a childhood love of fishing, three brothers opened a shop for a Chinese fishing-tackle brand in Mohakhali, Dhaka in 2014, later adding a showroom on Elephant Road. Buyers come from across the country via Facebook and YouTube, but in a low-rain year business was poor even in the April-October season.

According to The Business Standard, a man who grew up fishing with his father in a Bikrampur village became a fishing tackle dealer while searching for good rods and reels. Seeing strong interest among Bangladeshi hobby anglers in a Chinese brand, he began importing modern equipment on his brothers' advice and, with two brothers' help, opened a shop in Mohakhali in 2014. The man they used to buy equipment from before opening, 21 years in the trade, now manages the showroom. At first they sold only rods and reels; hooks, lines, nets, swivels, tackle boxes, tents and fishing boats were added gradually. They collect ant eggs from villages, store them in fridges and sell them as bait at Tk 1,200-1,500 a kg depending on season. Reels cost Tk 1,200-3,000, rods Tk 500-2,800, line Tk 150-400 and hooks Tk 10-60. Besides Mohakhali there is a showroom on Elephant Road. Customers come from across the country through their Facebook page and YouTube channel; an elderly man from Kurigram bought a rod and reel with money from selling goats. Many buy equipment as birthday or anniversary gifts. The rainy season is best for fishing, so April to October sales are good; but in the year reported, low rain left less water in water bodies and business was poor even at peak season. At their three fisheries in Sakhipur, Tangail they started 'Fish and Play', with a Tk 300 day fee. He says drying water bodies and current nets are shrinking fishing opportunities.
