Started with Tk 10,000 and 50 cylinders; now 400 cylinders and Tk 25,000-30,000 a month
A housewife in Atrai, Naogaon, began growing mushrooms in rooms beside her home in 2023 after watching YouTube. She now sells 5-6 kg a day, but must stop for three to four months in the heat.
The husband of a housewife in Atrai upazila, Naogaon, works for an NGO, and his income alone did not leave the household comfortable. Keeping ducks and hens and growing vegetables in front of the house brought little, so after watching mushroom-growing videos on YouTube she decided to try. On a known agriculture officer's advice her husband brought materials from Bogura, and she learned the method from YouTube and started in 2023 with just Tk 10,000. She fitted out a semi-brick room and a mud room beside the house for mushrooms. She began with 50 cylinders and now has 400. Five to six kg of mushrooms sell each day: fresh at Tk 300 a kg wholesale and dried at Tk 2,000 a kg. Monthly sales are Tk 40,000 to Tk 45,000, and after costs she earns Tk 25,000 to Tk 30,000. Mushrooms are ready to sell in 30 to 34 days. Monsoon and winter suit the crop, but in the heat she stops for three to four months. She has a few regular buyers yet cannot meet demand. The Atrai agriculture office taught her all the related practices.
Lessons
- 1.Mushroom farming can start small; learning on 50 cylinders and growing to 400 keeps risk low.
- 2.Production stops for several hot months, so leave those months out of your yearly income estimate.
- 3.Selling both fresh and dried widens price options; dried sells at Tk 2,000 a kg.
