Started with Tk 200 of spawn, lost all 100 cylinders the first time; now Tk 60-70 thousand profit a month
A young man in Rangpur sold his studio and equipment to pay for his mother's treatment. He began mushroom farming in 2022 from YouTube videos and lost all his first cylinders; after training he restarted and now makes Tk 60-70 thousand profit a month from fresh mushrooms, spawn and food products.
A young man with a diploma in mechanical engineering from Rangpur Polytechnic was a videography hobbyist with his own studio, including drones and cameras. After his mother was diagnosed with lung cancer he sold the studio, drones and all equipment to pay for treatment, yet she could not be saved. In October 2022 he started mushroom farming in a drum with just Tk 200 of spawn, following YouTube videos, but all 100 cylinders spoiled. Undeterred, he contacted the Buririhat Horticulture Centre and took a 10-day entrepreneur training at the Mushroom Development Institute in Savar. In January of the previous year he received Tk 3 lakh through a project, with which he built a growing room and set up a spawn-production lab at his in-laws' house. He now sells fresh mushrooms, spawn, soup mix, dried mushrooms, powder, pickle, chops and chips, and makes Tk 60-70 thousand profit a month. Following his lead, 35 women in the area grow mushrooms with training and spawn and sell their produce to him; one grower earns an extra Tk 5-7 thousand a month. His dream is to take mushrooms to an industrial scale.
Lessons
- 1.Starting from YouTube alone can ruin the first batch entirely; take training from a government institute first.
- 2.Adding spawn and dried or processed products, not just fresh mushrooms, widens the income.
- 3.Supplying seed and training to nearby growers and buying their produce secures both supply and market.
