This trader's drying yard at Nazirartek in Cox's Bazar turned out about 500 metric tons of dried fish last year; this season he does not expect even 200. The reason is simple: it is the peak of the drying season and there is no fish on the Cox's Bazar coast. He is not alone - about 600 of the roughly 700 mahals in the area have stopped production entirely. Against a normal seasonal 55,000 metric tons worth 350 crore taka, only 20,000 tons were produced between July and February. Four-fifths of what is still being dried comes from fish imported through Chittagong port rather than caught locally. Six thousand trawlers across nine upazilas and 45,000 workers in the mahals rest on that supply.
