What went wrongSupari growers and a market trader in Indurkani, Pirojpur, in an Amar Sangbad report

Twenty betel nuts: from 700-800 taka down to 200-300

The supari harvest in Indurkani was better than last year, but the price for twenty nuts fell from 700-800 taka to 200-300.

In Indurkani upazila of Pirojpur the supari harvest came in better than last year, but the price collapsed: twenty nuts that fetched 700-800 taka now fetch 200-300. One grower with supari on two bighas, whose household runs on the crop, said he was deeply disappointed not to get a fair price despite the good harvest. A trader at the Ghosherhat market said heavy inflows of supari from Rangpur, Chattogram and Khulna had flooded the local market and killed wholesale demand. The upazila agriculture officer confirmed the good harvest but had no data on why prices had fallen. Supari is not a crop that can be held back, so a big harvest here is a risk rather than a windfall.

Lessons

  1. 1.In a crop that cannot be held back, a good harvest is a price risk, not a windfall
  2. 2.Supply from other districts can break a local market overnight, so buying on last year's price is dangerous
