Old-plastic business began with a Tk 10,000 loan; now trades of Tk 1 lakh
A trader in Shibganj, Bogura, started buying and selling old plastic in 2011 with a Tk 10,000 loan. He makes Tk 15,000 to 20,000 profit on every Tk 1 lakh of sales.
A man in Dahila village, Shibganj municipality, Bogura, lived in poverty with four children. Encouraged by several people, in 2011 he took a Tk 10,000 loan and started a small old-plastic business at Dahila beside Bihar Road. According to Ajker Patrika, he buys old plastic from village hawkers at Tk 20 to 30 a kg depending on grade. He then sorts it, cuts it by machine, washes it well, grinds it into powder by machine and packs it in sacks of 20 to 30 kg. Each sack sells for Tk 600 to 800 to traders in Bogura and Dhaka. After all costs, he makes Tk 15,000 to 20,000 profit on every Tk 1 lakh of plastic sold. He now trades in lakhs of taka, has married off two daughters and educated his sons; his youngest son helps with the work. Besides him, 10 other retail plastic traders operate in Shibganj, and 10 factories have grown up in the upazila. An environment department official says these traders benefit the environment by collecting discarded items.
Lessons
- 1.You can start with a very small loan because the raw material is bought by the kg from hawkers.
- 2.Keeping quality through sorting, washing and grinding fetches a better price from factory buyers.
- 3.Profit is Tk 15,000 to 20,000 per lakh, so income grows with volume; line up buyers first.
