A one-man shop with no signboard, 12-15 kg of peda a day
12 kg of milk with 2.5 kg of sugar yields 4 kg 250 g of peda sold at 500 taka a kg; butter goes at 1,800 and ghee at 2,800, leaving 30,000-35,000 taka a month after costs.
This maker at Fakirhat in Raozan, Chattogram, has worked single-handed since 1990, making and selling peda, butter and ghee; he learned the trade from his father in 1986. He uses only milk and sugar: 12 kg of milk with 2.5 kg of sugar gives 4 kg 250 g of peda, and he sells 12-15 kg a day at 500 taka a kg. Butter takes two and a half hours of hand-churning for one kilo out of 12 kg of milk, which is why butter is 1,800 taka a kg and ghee 2,800. The shop has no signboard, yet one customer quoted in the report spends 1,000 taka on transport to buy 500 taka of peda - purity is the whole advertisement. After costs he clears 30,000-35,000 taka a month, with nobody on the payroll.
Lessons
- 1.Hand-churned butter costs 2.5 hours of labour per kilo: the price has to carry the work, not just the milk
- 2.A one-person shop with no signboard can still make 30,000-35,000 taka a month if reputation brings the customers to it
