1,200 taka a kilo early, 300 late, and another 4 lakh from selling seedlings

Strawberry on 25 shatak, at 150,000-200,000 taka a bigha to plant. Fruit brought 4-5 lakh taka or more this season, and selling runners and seedlings to other growers brought another 4 lakh.

This grower at Deuli village in Shibganj, Bogura, has strawberry on 25 shatak, in one of the districts where the crop has spread fastest. Planting costs 150,000 to 200,000 taka a bigha, largely for seedlings at 20 to 30 taka each. Fruit brought him 4 to 5 lakh taka or more this season, and selling runners and seedlings to other growers brought another 4 lakh. Price moves sharply through the season: up to 1,200 taka a kilo wholesale at the very start, 400 to 800 through the main window, and down towards 300 at the end. National production more than doubled in two years, from 210 tons on 22 acres in 2022-23 to 435 tons on 130 acres in 2024-25, which is exactly why the late-season price falls away.

Lessons

  1. 1.The early fruit carries the profit, 1,200 taka a kilo at the start against about 300 late, so reaching market first matters more than total yield
  2. 2.Selling seedlings to new entrants earned about as much as the fruit, but it is also what drives the acreage growth that pushes fruit prices down
