About the business

Getting parcels from Facebook pages and online shops into customers' hands. The e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh puts national volume at 350,000 to 400,000 parcels a day. There are two ways in: take pickup and delivery work in your area for one of the big couriers, or run your own small courier serving local online sellers. Capital is low because no warehouse is needed — a small room, two motorcycles and a few people will start it. The market rates are public: Steadfast charges from Tk 55 inside Dhaka up to Tk 135 city-to-city outside Dhaka, plus 1 percent of the cash collected at the door as a COD and risk charge. RedX charges Tk 70 inside Dhaka for up to 1 kg and Tk 150 to divisions outside Dhaka, with 0 percent COD inside Dhaka and 1 percent outside. The real risk is not capital but returns: when a customer refuses the parcel you pay for both legs of the journey. And because you collect cash from customers and hand it to sellers, large amounts of other people's money pass through you every day. Counting it and remitting it correctly is the actual job, and one mistake loses the seller for good.

What you need to start

  • Motorcycles (capital drops a lot if riders own theirs), parcel bags, a weighing scale, and at least a smartphone and a register to track every parcel.Equipment
  • Trade licence from the city corporation or municipality: form Tk 10, licence book Tk 50, standard tax Tk 30, stamp Tk 150-300, and a fee of Tk 100-60,000 by trade type.Licence
  • Courier service registration under the Department of Posts. The fee and conditions must be confirmed at the district post office.Licence
  • Bookkeeping, especially of other people's cash, and a real knowledge of local roads and addresses.Skill
  • Local online sellers, and the area office of a large courier if you sub-contract for them.Supplier
  • A small 100-300 sqft room for holding and sorting parcels. No warehouse needed.Workspace

How the work is done

  1. 1List the online sellers in your area and find out how many parcels each one ships a day.
  2. 2Decide whether to work for a large courier or run your own. The capital and the risk are different.
  3. 3Take a trade licence and check the Department of Posts registration rules for courier services.
  4. 4Rent a small room where parcels can be held and sorted. A warehouse is not needed.
  5. 5Arrange motorcycles and riders. Capital drops sharply if riders bring their own motorcycles.
  6. 6Sign a written agreement with each seller: the charge, who pays when a parcel returns, and the remittance period.
  7. 7Number every parcel and record where it is. A lost parcel is paid for out of your pocket.
  8. 8Record cash collected from buyers in a separate book. Never mix it with your own money.
  9. 9Remit seller money on a fixed daily or weekly schedule. Paying on time is your main marketing.
  10. 10Measure the return rate monthly. If it rises, renegotiate the price with that seller.

Where it works well

  • Strong fitChattogram · The second city, with both sellers and buyers in volume.
  • Strong fitDhaka · Most of the country's online sellers and parcels are Dhaka-centred.
  • Strong fitGazipur · Next to Dhaka, with high delivery density from factories and dense settlement.
  • Strong fitNarayanganj · Many online clothing sellers and correspondingly high parcel volume.
  • PossibleBogura · A northern distribution point from which surrounding districts can be served.
  • PossibleCumilla · On the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, so line-haul is easy.
  • PossibleKhulna · A divisional city where the couriers' outside-Dhaka divisional rates apply.
  • PossibleRajshahi · Online buying concentrated around the university and the city.
  • PossibleSylhet · Remittance families buy online heavily, but distance raises the cost per parcel.
  • Weak fitBandarban · Hill terrain, hard roads and low parcel counts.
  • Weak fitCox's Bazar · Distance makes the cost per parcel high.

Risks and cautions

  • HighWorking capital: You collect cash from buyers and remit it to sellers, so large amounts of other people's money sit with you every day. A hundred parcels at an average of Tk 1,000 is Tk 100,000. If a rider disappears with it or the count is wrong, the loss is yours, not the seller's.
  • HighDependency: Two or three large sellers carry the whole business. One switching to a cheaper courier halves daily volume. If you sub-contract for a large courier, a change of terms or of area partner ends the income.
  • HighDemand: When a buyer refuses delivery the parcel returns and you pay for both legs. Return rates are high on Facebook purchases, especially clothing and shoes, because sizes do not fit.
  • MediumCompliance: You do not know what is inside a parcel. Carrying banned or stolen goods puts legal liability on the carrier too. The risk is highest when a seller's identity and address are not verified.
  • MediumOther: Volume multiplies at festivals — Eid, Pohela Boishakh and the winter clothing season. Without extra people and bikes you deliver late and lose sellers; keeping them year round does not pay.
