Barek Mridha (55) of Amkhola village, Galachipa upazila, Patuakhali, is a farmer by birth who has grown watermelon in the rabi season for several years. A 2023 Prothom Alo report says he planted watermelon on 45 hectares that season. Traders from around the country arrive before the season to pay advances and stay on to collect the crop; he harvests from the field and sells to them. Galachipa grows more watermelon than any other upazila in the district, and the fruit goes by truck and covered van across the country.
