About
Although it is famous as 'Jogar Mishti', the shop's formal name is Jagabandhu Mistanna Bhandar; it stands in the Natun Bazar area of Kalapara municipal town. It began in 1947, at the time of Partition, in a tin-roofed hut with a few tables and chairs. After the founder Jagabandhu Haoladar died in 1991, his two sons Nikhil Chandra Haoladar and Chanchal Haoladar took over. Its best-known sweet is rasgolla made from cow's-milk chhana; besides two kinds of rasgolla it sells rasmalai, chhana, sandesh, baby sweets, kalojam, dry sweets, doi and nimki. Twelve to thirteen staff work in the workshop and shop, and the head sweet-maker, Shribas Kirtaniya, has been there for 30 years. The sweets are a favourite of tourists visiting Kuakata and are supplied to events in Dhaka, Barishal and Patuakhali towns. One customer told the paper that a sweet he now buys for Tk 30 cost Tk 2 when he was a child.
