About
Jane Alam, a farmer in Chandanaish upazila, Chattogram, grows guava on about 8 acres. Ten labourers work in the orchard at Tk 500–600 a day each. A basket holds about 250 guavas; at the start of the season a pair of baskets sold for Tk 2,500, though prices fall from mid-season. The hills of Kanchannagar and around Chandanaish are famous for 'Kanchan guava', grown without pesticides, and in season wholesalers buy at Roushan Hat and other temporary markets.
