About
Jolojog is a 132-year-old sweet maker in Jashore town that has made Jashore's traditional nolen gur para sandesh since it began; its owner is Sadhan Kumar Biswas. Nolen gur, made from the first sap after a date palm is tapped, is cooked in an iron pan with fresh milk chhana and sugar; the mixture is rolled into balls, beaten, and two halves are pressed together into a round, flat para sandesh with a coarse grain and a reddish colour. Demand peaks at the start of winter when nolen gur arrives, and output almost doubles at festivals. In winter 2024 the shop was making 15 to 20 kg of para sandesh a day, more when there were orders, selling at Tk 480 a kg.
