About
Sadek Golla, the spongy rasgolla of Jamtala Bazar in Sharsha upazila, Jashore, has been popular for nearly 70 years. In 1955, when milkmen brought extra milk to Sheikh Sadek Ali's tea stall beside the Jashore–Satkhira highway, a man from Cumilla showed him how to turn it into sweets, and Sadek Golla began. After Sheikh Sadek Ali died in 1999 his sons took over; today five sons and a grandson make the sweets. From the original shop under a banyan tree it has grown to five shops: three at Jamtala Bazar, one at the Satkhira bus stand in Navaran Bazar and one at Doratana in Jashore town. It is made from pure cow's-milk chhana in a light syrup, cooked over tamarind, wood-apple, babla and mahogany firewood; each piece weighs 50 to 100 grams. Its reputation reaches beyond the district: expatriates take it with them when they leave, and some ask for it to be sent abroad.
