Md. Rafiq (45) of Lighthouse Para, Kolatoli, in Cox's Bazar town started keeping pigeons at home as a hobby nine years ago, and has sold pet birds at the town's Friday bird market ever since. One Friday he brought about 200 pigeons of 12 breeds and sold 120 in two hours: racing pigeons, used in competitions, at Tk 4,000 a pair, and two pairs of fancy pigeons for Tk 11,000. He has another 170 pigeons ready for sale at home. For the past two years he has also kept hill roosters and rabbits; with cockfighting popular in the area, a hill rooster sells for Tk 5,000–6,000.
