About
Md. Shahabuddin Faraji farms the mid-river chars of the Meghna in Bhola (the Madhupur and Boiragi char area), and in the 2023 season planted about 20 acres of watermelon. Good weather gave large fruit, though he said fresh water would have helped. On his first day of harvest he cut 2,000 watermelons of 7-13 kg, to be sold in Feni. He reckons an acre yields at least 1,500 good-quality watermelons. Workers cut the fruit and load it onto trawlers for districts across the country; at the time 100 watermelons of 12-15 kg fetched Tk 35,000 at Dhaka wholesale markets, and 100 of 5-6 kg Tk 25,000 in Bhola.
