Mehedi Hasan Raju (24), youngest son of Abdul Latif of Bhogoti village, Keshabpur upazila, Jashore, is a final-year political science student at Government M. M. College, Jashore. With his family's financial help he leased land and in January 2022 set up a dragon fruit orchard on one acre at Altapol Teish Mile beside the Jashore-Chuknagar road, at a cost of about Tk 1 million. About 4,000 plants are trained on 1,000 concrete posts with tyres and rods, in three or four yellow and red varieties; each fruit weighs 250-600 grams. In the 2023 season he sold about Tk 1.2 million of fruit and expected about Tk 1.5 million in sales and Tk 300,000-350,000 profit after costs; his capital came back within a year. The wholesale price is Tk 250-300 a kg, and early in the season he got up to Tk 600. His dragon fruit is sold in most fruit shops in Keshabpur and goes to Jashore, Chuknagar, Khulna, Dhaka and elsewhere. No harmful ripening agents are used. Five workers work in the orchard regularly; being on the roadside, many people stop to see it, and he gives free fruit to poor visitors. He received training from the upazila agriculture office at the start.
