Riaz Morshed's Dragon Fruit Orchard

J. M. Riaz Morshed of Krishnanagar village in Jhikargacha municipality, Jashore, earned a diploma in electronics engineering at Jashore Government Polytechnic Institute and worked for a private electronics company. He quit the job, came home and took up farming, preparing land for dragon fruit in late 2022. He now grows red and yellow dragon fruit of Vietnamese, American and Thai varieties on 12.5 bigha, with another bigha planted earlier. He also has one bigha of banana and two bigha of Chinese lemon. Cuttings, planting, posts, care and sharecropped land cost an estimated Tk 4 million, and he says the orchard will bear well for six to seven years. The large fruit has to be picked daily; in one month he sold about Tk 400,000 of dragon fruit, and he expects a profit of at least Tk 200,000 a bigha per season.
