About
Someshpur village in Moynamoti union, Burichang upazila, Cumilla, is known as the 'vegetable seedling village'; lying between the Gomti river and the Rani Moynamoti palace, it has raised seedlings commercially for over seven decades. Grower Mir Shahidullah (52) has been in the business for 34 years, as his father was before him. This season he sowed 30 decimals; during the season he sells Tk 50,000–70,000 worth of seedlings a day and expected about Tk 40 lakh in sales this season. He says that because he uses good seed, people come from far away, even from India. One buyer from Suagazi, Sadar South, has bought from the village for 18 years. The season runs from August to December, with cauliflower, cabbage, tomato, aubergine, chilli and other seedlings.
