Sumon Hossain Bappi's Seedless Lemon Orchard

About

Sumon Hossain Bappi (21), son of Mozam Uddin Gazi of Mangalkot village in Keshabpur upazila, Jashore, used to work as an electrical mechanic from a shop beside Mangalkot bazar. When business slumped, after watching YouTube he brought more than 150 seedless lemon grafts from Bagherpara about a year and a half before July 2023 and planted them on 26 decimals for Tk 10,000. The trees fruited in eight months, each bearing about 1,500 lemons. In his first season he sold about 15,000 lemons at Tk 1 to Tk 6.20 each, and he has raised about 4,000 grafts that he sells at Tk 80-100 each. The lemons sell at Atharomile bazar in Chuknagar and other local markets; being seedless, sherbet sellers also buy straight from the orchard, and people come from various places to buy grafts. One worker works in the orchard regularly, and three or four more during grafting. Encouraged by the profit he has started lemons on another 36 decimals; he uses organic manure, which keeps costs low. The upazila agriculture office has supported him.
