Selim Reza's Orange and Malta Orchard

Selim Reza of Saranja village in Kaharol upazila, Dinajpur, is an accounting lecturer at Chandganj Degree College in Sadar upazila. In June 2020 he planted 200 China and Pakistani orange seedlings and 200 malta seedlings, brought from Chuadanga, on his own one acre. The first fruit came in April 2022; in that first year he sold 35 maunds of oranges and 50 maunds of malta, earning Tk 2.5 lakh. In 2023 his malta trees gave 120 maunds, bought by customers straight from the orchard; he expected 100 maunds of oranges, 30 of them already sold, and about Tk 6 lakh in orange sales that year. People come every day from Dinajpur town and nearby upazilas to see the orchard and take home 10-20 kg of oranges. He has raised several thousand orange saplings from his mother trees and sells them for Tk 150-200; several orchards in nearby districts have been planted from his saplings. He advises anyone wanting to start an orchard.
