About the business

A shop selling bats, balls, jerseys, badminton rackets, shuttles and indoor games such as carrom and ludo. The buyers fall into three groups: schools and colleges, neighbourhood clubs, and young people playing for themselves. On 16 September 2026 the Daraz catalogue showed, from named Bangladeshi sellers, children's wooden cricket bats at Tk 109-511, full-size tape-tennis bats at Tk 760-938 and English willow bats from Tk 2,250 to Tk 3,190; size-5 footballs at Tk 484-1,200; and badminton rackets from Tk 198 to Tk 4,500. That spread is the business. One rack carries a Tk 109 toy bat and a Tk 3,000 English willow: the cheap end sells often and earns little, the expensive end earns well and sells a handful of times a year. A new shop starts at the cheap end and only begins stocking serious bats once it has a relationship with the clubs. Demand is not even through the year. Tournaments fill the grounds in winter, which is the cricket and badminton season; school annual sports fall in December and January; and in a World Cup year football and jersey sales jump. Through the three monsoon months the grounds are wet and the shop is nearly idle.

  • Fitting a bat grip, stringing a racket, inflating a ball, and picking the right price band for the customer's level of play.Skill
  • Wholesale shops around Gulistan and the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, importing houses, and a screen-print or sublimation unit for jerseys.Supplier
  • A 150-400 square foot shop near a ground, school or stadium, with a wall to hang bats, shelves for balls and space to display jerseys.Workspace

How the work is done

  1. 1Look for a shop near a school, college, playing field or stadium. Players buy on the way back from the ground.
  2. 2Take the trade licence from the city corporation or municipality and pay the signboard fee.
  3. 3Walk the sports wholesale shops at Gulistan and under the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka and take prices. Note domestic brands and imported goods separately.
  4. 4Weight the first consignment to the cheap end: children's bats, tape-tennis balls, size-5 footballs, ordinary rackets and shuttles. Do not stock more than one expensive English willow bat.
  5. 5Get to know the physical training teachers at nearby schools and colleges. The annual sports equipment and prize orders come from them.
  6. 6List the local clubs and tournament committees, and arrange jersey printing. An order of eleven jerseys for one team is a bigger sale than a bat.
  7. 7Before supplying a school or club on credit, take a written order and at least half the money in advance. When the committee changes, nobody acknowledges the old bill.
  8. 8Offer bat gripping, racket stringing and ball inflation. These small services are what hold the customers.
  9. 9Bring the big consignment at least six weeks before the winter tournament season, and stock medals, trophies and cups separately for the December school sports.
  10. 10Cut back on new stock through the three monsoon months, keep rubber and leather goods dry, and spend that time collecting outstanding bills.

Where it works well

  • Strong fitChattogram · Club cricket around the M A Aziz Stadium, and a large city with many schools.
  • Strong fitDhaka · The Gulistan and Bangabandhu National Stadium wholesale market is here, along with the largest number of schools and clubs.
  • Strong fitSylhet · Strong cricket interest around the international stadium, and remittance families can afford the expensive bats.
  • PossibleBogura · Cricket around the Shaheed Chandu Stadium, and as a northern trading hub it draws buyers from surrounding upazilas.
  • PossibleCumilla · Large institutions including Victoria College, and easy supply along the highway to surrounding markets.
  • PossibleGazipur · Inter-factory tournaments among garment workers create demand for jerseys and balls.
  • PossibleKhulna · A divisional sports centre with regular tournaments around the stadium and the district sports association.
  • PossibleMymensingh · A divisional town and education centre, with steady school annual sports orders.
  • PossibleNarayanganj · Dense settlement and an old club culture, with the Dhaka wholesale market close by.
  • PossibleRajshahi · Many colleges and a university, giving steady student demand for equipment.

Risks and cautions

  • HighLate payment: Schools, colleges and neighbourhood clubs take goods on a bill and pay late. A school bill sits until the sports budget is released; with a club, if the committee changes after the tournament nobody acknowledges the old bill. A single tournament's jersey and equipment order can equal a month's whole capital, and losing it stops the shop.
  • HighDemand: Sales are tied to the season. The winter tournaments and the December-January school sports carry most of the year. Through the three monsoon months the grounds are wet and the shop is nearly shut, but rent and wages still have to be paid.
  • MediumWorking capital: One rack runs from a Tk 109 toy bat to a Tk 3,190 English willow. The price range is so wide that stocking every band scatters the capital. Money in an expensive bat or racket sits for months, while running out at the cheap end stops the daily sales altogether.
  • MediumSpoilage: Rubber and leather goods rot on the shelf: football bladders dry and crack, shuttlecocks go damp and break, wooden bats get worm and leather gloves mildew. The damage happens in exactly the monsoon months when sales are lowest.
  • MediumDependency: Most of the better bats, rackets and shuttles are imported. A rise in the dollar or a delay in opening an LC lifts the wholesale price in one step, and there is a real risk of not getting stock just before a tournament.
