Nur Islam Sardar's Year-round Mango Orchard and Nursery

Nur Islam Sardar of Pipragachhi village in Bagachra union, Sharsha upazila, Jashore, has worked with nurseries for 25 years; he began as a labourer in other people's nurseries and later set up his own fruit nursery beside his home. With help and advice from the local agriculture office he planted three bigha of Katimon mango in 2018, and the next year leased another six bigha for ten years and planted BARI-11, a variety developed by the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. These year-round mangoes fruit three times a year, and picking starts in January. By his account a bigha yields 40-45 maunds, and three bigha cost about Tk 100,000 a year to run. In one year he sold about Tk 400,000 of mangoes for a profit of over Tk 300,000; early in one season he had already sold Tk 120,000 of fruit and about Tk 60,000 of grafted saplings. During Ramadan he sold mangoes at the orchard for Tk 400 a kg in 2023 and Tk 350 a kg in 2025. Many educated young people in the area are taking up BARI-11 mango after seeing his success.
