Nusrat Jahan's Date Palm Garden

About

This date palm garden stands on one bigha of land in Mangalkot village, Keshabpur upazila, Jashore. As a child, Nusrat Jahan (Liza) planted the seeds of Saudi dates brought back by neighbours returning from Hajj; later she learned tree care from YouTube and turned the seedlings in the courtyard into a garden on the adjoining field. She is an undergraduate student at Keshabpur Degree College. The garden now has 50 to 60 date palms bearing Ambar, Ajwa and Mariam dates, and new suckers (locally called 'bog') are growing from the base of each tree. Her father Abdul Latif, a retired Palli Bidyut line technician, looks after the garden with her on advice from the agriculture department, and the whole family, including her mother Lamia Begum, helps. Sand is put under each tree to imitate desert conditions, organic fertiliser and vermicompost are used, and flowers are pollinated by hand. Suckers have sold for Tk 5,000 and seed-grown saplings for Tk 500. The garden has become a point of interest for people in the area.
