About
Basudebpur village in Rohita union of Manirampur upazila, Jashore, now known as a 'nursery village', owes its nursery trade to former union council member Mohammad Ali, who started a nursery there before independence. Being the first in the area, people called it the old nursery (Puraton Nursery), and that is now its official name too. Mohammad Ali's sons now run it. Set on 22 bigha, the nursery holds more than 100,000 saplings of several hundred species. Mohammad Ali once received an award as the country's top sapling producer. His youngest son Anowarul Islam says it was the first nursery in Khulna division, and traders once came from Khulna and nearby districts to buy saplings. Basudebpur's litchi saplings are especially valued by growers in Dinajpur.
