Moulding buckets, mugs and chairs from melted plastic. The market is worth about Tk 50,000 crore, but RFL's own store sells a 30-litre bucket at Tk 193, which virgin resin cannot match.

About the business

Buckets, mugs, bowls, chairs and stools are made by pouring melted plastic into a mould. The market is huge: the Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association puts the domestic plastic market at about Tk 50,000 crore, with roughly six thousand firms large and small and about 15 lakh people working in it. But the honest part comes first. Household plastic goods are dominated by RFL and Bengal. RFL alone consumes about 10,000 tonnes of raw material a month to make over five thousand products. On 16 September 2026 RFL's own online store listed a 30-litre bucket at Tk 193, a mug at Tk 88 and plastic chairs from Tk 340. Getting under those prices is hard for a new unit, because virgin resin is expensive: a tonne cost 900-950 US dollars before the war and was near 1,500 dollars by April 2026, roughly Tk 185 a kilo, with 32 percent duty on top of that at import. So the only route for a small moulder is recycled granules - hard plastic bought from scrap dealers and reprocessed, at well under a quarter of the virgin price. If you enter this trade, that gap is your entire business.

What you need to start

  • An injection moulding machine and a separate mould per product. Bismillah Machinery BD listed a plastic moulding machine at Tk 525,000 on Daraz (16-09-2026). Add a grinder, a dryer and cooling.Equipment
  • Raw material: virgin resin was about 1,500 dollars a tonne in April 2026 (roughly Tk 185 a kilo) with 32 percent import duty. The alternative is recycled granules made from hard plastic bought from scrap dealers.Starting stock
  • Fire licence from Fire Service and Civil Defence and Environmental Clearance from the Department of Environment, applicable by the size and process of the unit. Fees and validity must be checked locally; they could not be found in this research.Licence
  • BSTI standard certification, applicable by product. If you make food-contact plastic containers, check with the BSTI office first.Licence
  • Trade licence from the city corporation or municipality: form Tk 10, licence book Tk 50, standard tax Tk 30, stamp Tk 150-300, licence fee Tk 100-60,000 by trade type. Issued in 3-5 working days and renewed yearly.Licence
  • A resin importer or a recycled granule supplier, plus a mould-making workshop.Supplier
  • A workshop with an industrial power connection and adequate load, plus separate storage for raw material and finished goods. Plastic goods are light but take up a great deal of space.Workspace

How the work is done

  1. 1Decide first what you will make and whether you will use virgin or recycled granules. Virgin resin is about Tk 185 a kilo plus 32 percent import duty, and on that cost base you cannot fight RFL's Tk 193 bucket.
  2. 2Line up recycled granule supply. Hard plastic is bought from scrap dealers, washed, shredded and pelletised. Without steady supply the machine sits idle.
  3. 3Sort out power and premises. An injection moulding machine draws heavy load; get the industrial connection and load approval first, or the machine will arrive and not run.
  4. 4Take the trade licence from the city corporation or municipality, and check whether the fire licence and Department of Environment clearance apply to the unit.
  5. 5Buy the machine. Bismillah Machinery BD listed a plastic moulding machine at Tk 525,000 on Daraz (16-09-2026). Price varies a lot with tonnage and mould type, so take at least three quotations.
  6. 6Cut a separate mould for each product. The mould is both the lasting asset and the lasting risk: if a product does not sell, that mould money does not come back.
  7. 7Check with BSTI whether a product standard certificate applies, especially if you make food containers.
  8. 8Take samples to the wholesale market. Household plastics move through wholesalers, who order from samples and set the price there.
  9. 9Look for the gaps the big brands leave: odd sizes, heavy-duty stools for decorators, special containers for industry. A straight price fight with RFL on a plain 30-litre bucket is a loss.
  10. 10Check the resin price every month. In April 2026 war pushed it up 40-50 percent a tonne and RFL raised product prices 10-15 percent. In that swing, locking an order price in advance is dangerous.

Where it works well

  • Strong fitChattogram · The port means imported raw material lands here first and cheapest.
  • Strong fitDhaka · The biggest wholesale market for household plastics, the scrap market and the mould-making workshops are all here.
  • Strong fitGazipur · Industrial power and space are easier to get, and large plastic factories are already here.
  • Strong fitNarayanganj · A dense belt of small and medium plastic units within reach of Dhaka's wholesale market.
  • PossibleBogura · The northern wholesale hub, with local craftsmen able to make moulds and parts.
  • PossibleCumilla · On the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, able to serve both big markets.
  • PossibleKhulna · A large wholesale market for the south-west, with Mongla port nearby.
  • PossibleMunshiganj · Next to Dhaka with cheaper land and rent, and easy river transport.

Risks and cautions

  • HighDemand: The market belongs to the big firms. RFL alone converts about 10,000 tonnes of raw material a month into over five thousand products and sells a 30-litre bucket at Tk 193 and a mug at Tk 88 in its own store. A small unit cannot fight that buying power, mould range and dealer network on a standard product. Small units survive only in the sizes and items the big firms do not bother with.
  • HighWorking capital: Resin prices jump without warning. A tonne cost 900-950 dollars before the war and was near 1,500 dollars by April 2026, a 40-50 percent jump. The managing director of Luna Polymer says imports carry 32 percent duty and bank support is thin. Akij Plastics cut production 20 percent at that point. A unit without stock simply stops.
  • HighDependency: Almost all raw material is imported. The association puts annual demand at about 17 lakh tonnes, of which about 15 lakh tonnes is imported, and its president says plainly that if imports fall many small factories will shut. When a sea lane such as the Strait of Hormuz closes, or dollars are not available, the small units stop first.
  • MediumOther: Mould money dies. Every new product needs its own mould and a mould has no other use. If a product does not move, its entire mould cost is a loss, and a small unit can afford that mistake two or three times at most.
