About the business
A signboard used to mean letters painted by hand on tin. Now it is a printing business. A large eco-solvent or solvent printer at the front of the shop, a cutting plotter beside it and design software on a computer are the spine of the trade. The work comes in three tiers, and their prices and margins are completely different. At the bottom are banners and festoons: one Dhaka firm's published rate is Tk 18 a square foot for a printed PVC banner and Tk 28 for a festoon, while PVC roll costs Tk 7.90 a square foot. There is a lot of this work, the margin is thin, and before an election or festival hundreds of square feet have to be printed overnight. In the middle are stickers and panaflex signs: sticker cutting Tk 45, HP latex print Tk 70, a panaflex sign Tk 380 a square foot. At the top are LED and acrylic-letter signs: LED sign Tk 1,470, LED neon Tk 1,270, and another firm's 3D acrylic-letter LED boards at Tk 875-1,375 a square foot with a 25 square foot minimum. That firm prints its own list prices of Tk 1,275-1,675 next to the lower selling price, which shows that even the top tier is fighting on price. The capital sum is simple: a cutting plotter Tk 72,000, a single-head eco-solvent printer Tk 340,000, a 1.8 m eco-solvent Tk 620,000, and a large solvent printer rated at 140 square metres an hour Tk 1,250,000. Starting with only a plotter and design work and buying the printing from another shop is also a path.

How the work is done
- 1Decide which tier you are entering: banners, stickers and panaflex, or LED. A banner leaves about Tk 6 a square foot, an LED sign over Tk 500, but LED needs more skill and more capital.
- 2Learn the design software first - laying out in Illustrator or CorelDRAW, Bangla fonts and sizing. Customers walk in for the design, not for the printer.
- 3Take a roadside shop with room to stand and dry large boards and a stable power line. The printer needs a cool room with little dust.
- 4Buy the cutting plotter first (for example Tk 72,000). Start earning on sticker cutting and vinyl lettering and buy in large-format printing from another shop for now.
- 5Buy the printer once the work justifies it: single-head eco-solvent Tk 340,000, 1.8 m eco-solvent Tk 620,000, large solvent Tk 1,250,000. If on instalments, put the monthly payment into the sums first.
- 6Settle a roll supplier: PVC roll Tk 7.90 a square foot, 510 gsm panaflex Tk 19, white vinyl Tk 9.90, colour vinyl Tk 13. Before elections and festivals both the price and the shortage rise, so stock up early.
- 7Take the trade licence (form Tk 10, book Tk 50, standard tax Tk 30, stamp Tk 150-300, fee Tk 100-60,000, issued in 3-5 working days).
- 8Make a rate card by the square foot and put it up. Published Dhaka rates - banner Tk 18, sticker cutting Tk 45, panaflex sign Tk 380, LED sign Tk 1,470 - are a starting point, but find out your own area's rates first.
- 9Get every job's design, spelling and size approved by the customer in writing or by message before printing. Reprinting a misspelt banner is at your cost.
- 10Take half in advance, especially on political and large event work. After an election many bills are never collected.
- 11If you move into LED signs, keep an electrician - wrong module wiring, a poor power supply or water ingress and the board goes dark in the monsoon, and the repair call comes to you.
- 12Keep to the printer's head-cleaning routine; leave it idle a few days and the ink dries in the head, and a replacement head is the biggest surprise cost in this trade.

Risks and cautions
- HighDependency: The whole shop stands on one printer. A failed head or blocked ink line sends that day's work to a competitor, and imported heads take days to weeks to arrive. Leaving the machine idle for a few days can dry the ink in the head and ruin it.
- HighDemand: Price fighting runs top to bottom. One Dhaka LED sign firm prints list prices of Tk 1,275-1,675 and sells at Tk 875-1,375, discounts of up to 30 percent. At the bottom a banner leaves about Tk 6 a square foot, and a neighbour cutting Tk 2 takes the job.
- HighLate payment: Political and agency bills hang for one to two months, and after an election some are never paid. Because thousands of square feet go through in a single election night, one unpaid bill can eat several months' profit.
- MediumCompliance: City corporations periodically clear unauthorised signboards and banners. When a fitted board is taken down, the customer often turns to the maker for a refund or a new board, even though the permission was the customer's duty.
- MediumWorking capital: A printer on instalments has to be paid for whether there is work or not. Outdoor work falls away in the July-August rains, yet those two months' instalments and rent must be set aside in advance from festival-season earnings.
