Tehari Ghar opened in a small space in 1987 on the road opposite the Sobhanbagh Officers' Quarters gate at Dhanmondi 13; the owner then was Kazi Akhlak Ahmed. Md. Iqbal Hossain, who joined as an employee the next year, took over running the shop in 1992 after paying an advance; he is also the head cook, three cooks follow his recipe, and new cooks are trained by him. The tehari is made with boneless beef and chinigura rice in mustard oil, served with potatoes and salad; bhuna khichuri, chicken biryani and borhani are also sold. Prices are Tk 200–400. Five or six tables seat 20–22 people, and food can be taken away. In 2010–11 it sold Tk 2–2.5 lakh of tehari a day; now daily sales are Tk 70,000–80,000, and more than a maund of rice is cooked each day.
